Temp, Temp-to-Perm, or Permanent: Which Job Type Is Right for You?

When you work with a staffing agency, you'll see roles labelled temporary, temp-to-perm, or permanent. Here's what each one means for you as a job seeker.

Temporary (contract) roles

You're placed with an employer for a set period — a busy season, a project, or to cover a leave. Great for fast income, flexibility, and trying different workplaces. You're paid by the agency.

Temp-to-permanent roles

You start on contract, and if it's a good fit for both sides, the employer hires you full-time. This is one of the most common paths to a permanent job — it lets you prove yourself on the floor rather than in an interview.

Permanent (direct-hire) roles

You're hired directly by the employer from day one. These take longer to fill because the match matters more, but they offer the most stability.

Which should you choose?

If you need income now or want flexibility, start with temporary or temp-to-perm. If you're after long-term stability and have specific skills, direct-hire may suit you better. A recruiter can guide you based on your situation.
